Time to cover up at the Harrogate Turkish Baths

15 April 2021

Harrogate Borough Council is set to decide upon changes to the single-sex sessions at the Harrogate Turkish Baths.

At the momment there is a single male-only session and 3 female-only sessions. The proposal will be debated by HBC on 23 April 20201, and will include a proposal to make the wearing of swimwear compulsory. The wearing of swimwear in single sex sessions is currently optional.

The changes are being proposed for:

  • Promote inclusivity
  • Ensure that the Council will meet its equality obligations under the Equality Act 2010 in delivering services and complying with its Public Sector Equality Duty
  • Enable both male and female Turkish baths attendants to work at both sessions as having to source female or male only staff for a particular single sex sessions can cause operational staffing

The proposals foll a consultation exercise from July 2020.

  1. Frankly pathetic. What the hell does inclusivity mean here? An effort to better include those cultures where women are forced to cover up from an early age and told that their bodies are shameful. As if the western advertising industry weren’t causing enough psychological damage to women. Are men or women unable to be naked in the changing room too? In the showers? What is this medievalism? Hopefully people will just ignore your puritanical nonsense and we will see how quickly you get bored of trying to eject people naked people. Looking forward to some naked protests outside your bathhouse too.
