Dj Trev’s guide to something with gumph for the end of the month

30 January 2014

After “coming soon” for about six months (and trust me ladies, this writer knows more than a little about coming soon) Major Tom’s Social looks like it is opening it’s doors this week – On Thursday by all accounts.

I’m really looking forward to checking this place out, I was in the other place they own in Leeds this last week – called Baby Jupiter – and it’s well good; thus I’m optimistic that it’s going to be the type of place I’ve sat in, in other towns and cities and though “it would be great if Harrogate had one of these”. That will be perfect for me as someone who prefers NOT to put my money where my mouth is, as I can see if it works without ploughing all of my hard earned cash into it (apart from over the bar, which I suppose is a less sound business plan for myself, but hey, I didn’t manage to afford new newspapers for sheets every third week without taking a few risky financial decisions). I’m not sure about the opening times there, but I do know that they have an IPA, a Stout, an Organic Cider, a Liefmans Fruit beer, a Belgium Red and the superb Brew Dog IPA on this week, as I have been stalking them on facebook. I tried to get a set there as they will be having vinyl only Dj’s playing and I can do that, but they politely ignored my requests – which really is Karma, as anyone who has ever requested a song “next” from me will know. I am actually doing some of that Dj’ing this weekend, on Saturday I’m at the Den. At the risk of cursing it, last Saturday I was there and had a really good night, so why not come down and ruin it for me this week and ask for a load of songs “next”?

Anyway, I was talking about Major Tom’s wasn’t I before I got sidetracked with that whole “me” thing…? It’s on the ginnel, sort of opposite Lure near Monteys, so go check it out. Speaking of the glorious Monteys this Friday The MG Band are playing there, so whilst you don’t really need an excuse to go there, that is a good one.

Back to Saturday, and as February kicks in with all it’s gloomy glory, one sure fire way to chase away the blues is a spot of Karaoki right? And even better if it’s in aid of a good cause – so check out the Charity Karaoki night at the Manhattan club, in aid of Helping the homeless and vulnerable. Five quid gets you entry, a hotdog, and feeds 4 homeless people. This seems much better value that the 5 quid I just spent on “Spank” stomach flattening pants. I mean come on… Like my stomach needs flattening?

Also on Saturday The Empress on the Stray has Dj Tim Paul back in doing his “Big Video Thing” which seems to be going really well for them. I’ve no idea what it is really, I think it’s a bit silly – as the best quizzes are – but I know Tim does a good quiz and is a very nice man too. And a bit silly.

There are a couple of “occasional” events on Friday, I always go on a bit about Moko Lounge’s , “Knee Deep” House Night but I can’t help it, it’s the kind of night that add’s a different dimension to what’s going on in Harrogate, and that is what it’s all about isn’t it? This months guest Dj’s are Alcatraz Harry & Josh Demello. I can’t pretend to be cool enough to have heard of Alcatraz Harry, but Josh Demello really gets around, having played Amnesia, Privilege, Space and Sankeys in Ibiza and a load of places closer to home, and he’s only like 23. The total GET. Still, this night is has got what people my age call a “buzz” about it, I’m sure there’s a cooler way to put it, but really, who cares, just go and have a look and see what it’s all about yeah?

Charlies Bar is a nice joint half way up Otley Road that I’ve mentioned before, this Friday there they have an acoustic night with Liam Grey, who is quality for a good sing song, and it’s free entry. I dunno if he’s still doing it, but Liam used to do a great “Day we caught the train” by Ocean Colour Scene… listen, if he doesn’t do that when you go see him don’t blame me… But that’s the ball park he rocks in and it’s ideal drinking music, and Charlies has some ideal drinks available!

I mention every month that on the first Wednesday of the month the Mitre Pub in Knaresborough host their Jazz Club. I usually make some kind of poor “jazz” related pun (as in some circles “jazz” means bare ladies what’s clothes have fallen off) but this month I’m going to take the high ground and just say that The Mitre is an ace pub. Trust me, I was in there the other day and I just love it. I don’t really like Jazz, but I do really like Beer d’y’see?

There are a couple of events I wanna mention that aren’t on til next week but I think they are the type of thing you perhaps need to plan in advance for:

Tiffany’s Cafe in Starbeck occasionally host’s acoustic afternoons with Tapas, wine & tunes, and they have one coming up on Saturday 8th February. It starts at 3 in the avo and runs til 7, and on the 8th features Yo Preston, who has supported the likes of Olly Murs and Tinchy Stryda. He knows how to set a good vibe for you to tuck into some tasty tapas and whilst I’ve not eaten tapas there, everything else I’ve ever eaten there has been really good so I reckon this will be a good way to spend a Saturday afternoon. I also reckon booking is probably advisable for this, but what am I, your mum?

Before that, on Friday 7th February Lure bar launches a monthly house & tech house night, with a whole bunch of Dj’s playing from 8.30pm til 2.30 am and it’s free to get in. Called “Discotek” this looks like another good solid night at the house end of the spectrum, which is getting bigger and bigger every week. The rest of the time on Fridays they are relaunching their regular slots with my mate Toby Skinner playing an eclectic set of house, breakbeat and generally funky music. Lure is a nice looking bar, though of course it’s actually genuinely 57% better looking when I dj there on Thursdays with my quiz night, which in case you are wondering, is going pretty well. You weren’t wondering were you? If anything, I expect you were thinking “wow, Trev really has been fair and even handed this week and not shoehorned in many references about his own nights- oh no, there, he’s blown it”.

Whilst I’m on, in the fear that you just skip the bit at the bottom of the page I like to call “shameless self promotion” I’d like to force in here that fact that for once I’ve actually put a new mix up on www.mixcloud.com/djtrevuk… I don’t want to talk about it too much as that is what facebook is for right? Save to say it’s arguably the greatest Classical Music show there is on mixcloud. It is, as far as I can work out, the ONLY classical music show on mixcloud, but still, take the acclaim where you can get it right?

Here’s some listings, but seriously, whilst you peruse them at your leisure, if you vaguely enjoy anything about how I write this bit, theoretically you may also vaguely enjoy the show I’ve just mentioned; it will make it seem like much less of a waste of my time if more people listen to it than just my mum. Though my mum doesn’t even listen to my shows because of all the swearing. Actually, there really is a LOT of swearing in this one, so forget I mentioned it at all. Listen to something different.
