Squire Patton Boggs partner Vipal Patel has received an Attorney General Award. This is the highest award recognised by the Department of Justice to reward recipients who demonstrated exemplary achievements and service to the organisation. Below, we explore the award and other recognition Squire Patton Boggs has received.

Event

But what was the event that led to Patel winning his award? This was for his part in an investigation and response to a terrorist attack in Ohio. The 2019 Dayton shooting saw a 24-year-old killing nine people and wounding a further 17. This occurred on August 4th and Patel was tasked with leading a team of prosecutors and investigators following this mass shooting. Patel’s team went on to successfully prosecute an individual who illegally obtained and possessed various firearms before supplying certain equipment used by the mass shooter in the shooting.

The award

This led to Patel winning his award from the Department of Justice as part of the 69th Annual Attorney General’s Awards. Every year the NAAG presents seven awards to attorneys who have made momentous achievements that have furthered the mission of the organisation. In Patel’s case, this was for “Outstanding Work in Furthering the Interests of U.S. National Security for his role in the Investigation and Response to a Domestic Terrorist Attack in Dayton, Ohio”. Law enforcement agencies worked relentlessly following the shooting to further U.S National Security. This was to work out whether the shooter acted alone, how he got his weapons and determine what his motive was. By working through this evidence, Patel and law enforcement were able to prosecute an individual who supplied equipment for the shooting.

Other recognition

And Squire Patton Boggs has received further recognition of late too. The firm has more recently won the award for turnaround of the year, for its work on the Ferrellgas Partners restructuring. This is an award that’s usually given to the best value-creating transactions, outstanding firms, professionals and leaders from the global restructuring, insolvency, and distressed investing communities.
