Triumphant return to the stage for Rossett students

28 July 2022

It was a proud and emotional moment for students at Rossett School as they returned to treading the boards after an absence of two years.

In their first full stage production following Covid restrictions, students from all year groups showcased their fantastic talents as they presented their take on the Roald Dahl classic, Matilda JR.

Leading the cast with triumphant performances that would not have been out of place in a professional production were Pheobe Connolley, Luke Bailey and Alice Bristow as Matilda, Miss Trunchbull and Miss Honey respectively.

Director of Learning for the Arts, Amanda McLurg, said: “The whole of the cast were fully committed with each and every one of them delivering an outstanding performance. Students, staff and parents had the most amazing time although there is a little bit of post-Matilda JR blues around the place now!”

Around 100 students were involved in the end of year production, both on stage and behind the scenes. Alongside those in the cast, students demonstrated talent and creativity in lighting, sound, music and stage crew.

Matinee performances were given to local primary school children, followed by two sell-out evening shows which were described by audience members as ‘sensational’ and ‘highly professional’.

Headteacher Helen Woodcock added: “It was fantastic to see the wealth of talent displayed by all our students in this wonderful show. Here at Rossett we offer a multitude of opportunities to take part in a range of creative activities: our Drama department is a thriving, valued and popular part of this programme.”
