Following the incident, police made an appeal to trace the driver of the black Corsa, but to date they have not come forward.

Family statement:

We would like to thank everyone for all their help and support at this tragic time, we are still trying hard to come to terms with the huge loss of Darren, Our lives will never be the same again.

If anyone has any information, no matter how small we urge you to speak with the North Yorkshire Police. We would ask for some privacy at this time.

Officers are keen to stress that the driver may not be aware that a collision had occurred.

Roads Policing Sergeant John Lumbard, said:

It’s vitally important to our investigation into Mr Greave’s death that we trace the driver of the Corsa. It’s entirely possible that the driver is completely unaware that a collision has occurred. However, their information could be crucial to our investigation to establish the exact circumstances of the crash.

I am therefore appealing for all drivers of black Vauxhall Corsas who were driving along the B1224 from York to Wetherby between 5pm and 5.30pm on Thursday 17 October, to contact us to enable us to eliminate you from our investigation.

Drivers and anyone else with any information which could assist the investigation, are asked to contact North Yorkshire Police on 101, select option 1 and pass information to the Force Control Room quoting incident number 12130180501.
