The future is positively purple for Harrogate adults with learning disabilities

20 March 2013

A brand new social club for adults with learning disabilities, called The Purple Hub, launches next Monday 25th March at 1.30pm at St. Peter’s Church on Cambridge Road in Harrogate. The hub provides new opportunities for people with learning disabilities to socialise together around shared interests through a growing network of smaller hub groups.

The first hub, called Words and Wisdom, has a literary theme. The group meet every Monday to enjoy creative writing, storytelling, audio books, the purple library, chats with new friends and much more. A second hub, focusing on living a healthy lifestyle, is set to launch after Easter.

Nine adults with learning disabilities from the local area form The Management Squad, who as a group are responsible for developing, organising and promoting the hubs. They have recently completed a year-long leadership training programme run by Purple Patch Arts to learn new skills such as management and event organisation. They have also worked with a designer to create a logo and website, which is live at www.thepurplehub.org

Management Squad member, Rachel Barker, pictured left, said:

I feel happy being on the management squad. It’s giving me a lot of encouragement and inspiration. I’ve learnt about communication and being good at listening and planning. I am enjoying having a career.

The Management Squad are recruiting now for new members to join the hubs. Members will then be able to attend more hub groups. To celebrate the launch of The Purple Hub the Management Squad are offering FREE membership until July 2013 with a 50% discount for next year.

From September annual membership costs £100. To find out more about the hub or to become a member call or text 07725 041801, email hub@purplepatcharts.org
