The intelligence-led operation saw specially trained officers from the UK Border Agency target the Shabab Pavilion, Cheltenham Parade, Harrogate. The enforcement action is part of an on-going nationwide crackdown tackling immigration crime.

Following immigration checks, an Afghan man, with no permission to work in the UK, were arrested for failing to leave the UK after his asylum claim was refused. He remains in detention as steps are taken to remove him from the UK.

The Shabab restaurant was served with a civil penalty notice worth a total of up to £10,000 for employing the illegal workers and could face prosecution if they are caught hiring illegal workers again.

Businesses have a responsibility to check that the workers they hire are entitled to work in the UK. If the businesses are unable to show that they carried out these checks they will face a fine of up to £10,000 per illegal worker.

Brian Craven, Local Immigration Team Leader for the UK Border Agency in North Yorkshire, said:

“Our goal is to protect local communities and law abiding businesses from the often unseen harms of illegal working, like exploitation and unfair competition.

“The UK Border Agency is working hard to tackle illegal working and apprehend immigration offenders and this arrest is just part of an on-going crackdown across the country.”
