An influx of anglers is expected at Yorkshire Water’s fishery in the Washburn Valley near Harrogate to make the most of a fish frenzy in Fewston reservoir which has been topped up with thousands of rainbow trout to mark the beginning of the 2017 fishing season.

The fishery includes Fewston, Swinsty and Thruscross reservoirs and is set in the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Approximately 6,500 rainbow trout, which are highly regarded game fish, will be added to Fewston reservoir, the middle reservoir of the chain of three, throughout the fishing season up until November. Many anglers consider the rainbow trout the hardest-fighting trout species and they are a popular target for fly fishers.

In addition, wild brown trout fishing in on offer at Thruscross reservoir on a catch and return basis only and coarse fishing, as well as fly fishing, is also available at Swinsty reservoir with likely catches including roach, perch, chub and dace.

The ground-keeper at the Washburn Valley reservoirs is Colin Winterburn who is a qualified Salmon and Trout national instructor. He said: These three reservoirs in the Washburn Valley are the jewel in the crown of our land. Hundreds of anglers love the fishery because it offers exceptionally high quality trout fishing in a stunning rural and peaceful setting.

As we introduce the 10,000lb of fish to our waters over the next eight months, anglers can look forward to a fish frenzy and reeling in some great catches. So far the largest recorded trout catch came in 2006 when a 14lb rainbow specimen was landed. We challenge anglers to beat that!

A fishing platform, with associated parking, is available adjacent to  Swinsty reservoir that also caters for disabled anglers.

The Washburn Valley Fishery is open from the 25th March, seven days a week between 7.30am and one hour after sunset. Day tickets cost £20, concessions are £17, and evening tickets are available at £15.  For more information about the fishery, details of on-site tuition and competitions visit the Swinsty Fishing Office which is located at Swinsty Moor car park, or call 01943 880658.
