Get snapping for the Great Yorkshire Show

Amateur and professional photographers and their cameras are being encouraged to visit their local woodlands for a new competition organised by the Yorkshire Agricultural Society.

To celebrate the 2011 International Year of the Forests, the Society, organisers of the Great Yorkshire Show, is launching a challenge to find the best photographs of trees and woods. The Show, England’s premier agricultural event, takes place on Tuesday 12 – Thursday 14 July, at the Great Yorkshire Showground, Harrogate.

The competition is split into three categories – for juniors, seniors and professionals, and aims to celebrate some of the country’s most spectacular woodland scenery, which is home to wonderful wildlife and also offers opportunities for outdoor activities for people of all ages. The Society is looking for photographs of woodlands or individual trees from across the UK. The competition is kindly sponsored by BTCV, the UK’s largest practical conservation charity.

The 30 best photographs will be displayed in the Forestry Pavilion at what will be the 153rd Great Yorkshire Show.

“This is a super opportunity to celebrate our woodlands,” said Show Director, Bill Cowling. “We are wanting entries from photographers of all abilities and across all age ranges and I am sure we will get some stunning pictures as a result.”

During the three show days, visitors will be able to vote for their favourite picture, after which the winners will be announced.

Budding photographers are split into three age ranges – juniors for those up to and including 16-year-olds; seniors for 17 years and over, and professional photographers.

Each category winner will receive £50 in Jessops’ vouchers to spend on photographic equipment and the overall winner’s prize will be a photographic day with Harrogate photographer Javan Liam.

“Snappers” are being urged to begin taking pictures as soon as possible – with entries needed by Friday 3 June. For an application form, please go to the Great Yorkshire Show website at www.greatyorkshireshow.co.uk
