Why you should vote on 5 May – Wallace Sampson, chief executive of Harrogate Borough Council

Wallace Sampson is the chief executive of Harrogate Borough Council.

Wallace Sampson OBE, chief executive of Harrogate Borough Council and deputy returning officer, said:

This Thursday (5 May), for the first-time, residents across North Yorkshire will be able to vote for their local councillor who will form part of 89 new divisions, represented by 90 councillors across the county.

The councillors elected will serve the final year of the county council and the first four years of the new single council that will define a new era for the county. They will shape what public services look like ahead of the new North Yorkshire Council.

Depending on where residents live, they may also have the opportunity to vote for a local town or parish councillor.

Voting is key to people’s involvement in democracy because the ballot box is the place where people get to have their say on who represents them and the decisions they make on their behalf.

These elections are incredibly significant. And I would urge anyone eligible to vote to head to their polling station on Thursday or return their postal vote by this date to ensure their vote matters.
