North Yorkshire’s new Chief Constable confirmed

15 August 2018

Lisa Winward is to be North Yorkshire’s new Chief Constable after the recommendation of Police and Crime Commissioner Julia Mulligan was endorsed.

The Police and Crime Panel met today (Wednesday 15 August) for a confirmatory hearing to consider Temporary Chief Constable Winward’s suitability for the role, as is statutorily required. Following the meeting, they recommended that the appointment be confirmed.

A two-day rigorous interview process was held in July by the Police and Crime Commissioner, including a question time event where members of the public put their queries and concerns to the two candidates for the position. After this process, Lisa Winward was named as the Commissioner’s preferred candidate for the permanent position.

The new Chief Constable will formally take up her role on Friday, 17 August, 2018.

Julia Mulligan, elected Police and Crime Commissioner for North Yorkshire, said:

I am delighted to be able to confirm Lisa Winward as the next Chief Constable of North Yorkshire and congratulate her on her success after what has been a robust and challenging selection process.

Lisa has the leadership, skills and experience to drive forward local policing in North Yorkshire and ensure the county’s residents are safe and feel safe.

Having been the Temporary Chief Constable since Dave Jones’ retirement, the consistency Lisa will bring to the role alongside her knowledge of North Yorkshire Police at every level will ensure she hits the ground running. I look forward to working with her to take forward the plans for policing in the years ahead, as set out in my Police and Crime Plan.

Lisa Winward started her police career with North Yorkshire Police in 1993 as a Special Constable in York. She joined Humberside Police in 1994 before returning to North Yorkshire in 2008.

Since then she has held a range of roles – from Commander for York, to Head of Major Crime, Specialist Operations, Criminal Justice and Force Intelligence, and she was appointed Deputy Chief Constable in 2017.

Lisa Winward said:

I’m delighted that the Police and Crime Panel has confirmed my appointment, and I am looking forward to serving the public of North Yorkshire as the permanent Chief Constable.
