Tour de Yorkshire champion backs the region’s first major cycle expo

17 April 2018

With the Tour de Yorkshire just around the corner, Cycle Expo Yorkshire has received the backing from last year’s women’s champion, Lizzie Deignan.

The 2015 world champion and Olympic silver medallist has been unveiled as an ambassador for Cycle Expo Yorkshire, which is due to roll into Harrogate later this year.

Recently announcing her pregnancy Lizzie has thrown her weight behind the Cycle Expo, commenting: “To be able to wave the flag for the Cycle Expo Yorkshire is an honour. I’m delighted to be a part of it and I’m excited to still have heavy involvement in the industry while I’m taking a break from racing. I hope that we can use events like this as a way of encouraging even more people into the sport.”

Following on from the Tour de Yorkshire, the cycle expo is an event which will add to the county’s already-impressive calendar of international cycling events.

A proud Yorkshire woman herself, Lizzie grew up in Otley, West Yorkshire: “The Cycle Expo Yorkshire is such a great opportunity for the region and I am so proud that my home county is becoming a global destination for cycling. This is where I learned to ride my bike and where I started training, and where other cyclists come from far and wide to experience the beautiful scenery.”

Twice winner of the season-long UCI Women’s Road World Cup and four-times winner of the British National Road Race Championships, the 29-year-old is considered one of the great success stories in British cycling.

Having taken up cycling in 2004 after the British Cycling’s Olympic Talent Team visited her school, Lizzie now divides her time between her training base in Monaco and Otley. Formerly known as Lizzie Armistead, she married long term partner and Irish road racing Olympian, Philip Deignan in 2016.

A partnership between Welcome to Yorkshire and Leeds-based marketing and events specialists, XSEM, Cycle Expo Yorkshire will see a number of races, competitions and exhibitors covering all cycling disciplines, from BMX to triathlon, road racing to cross country.

The Cycle Expo Yorkshire will boast a number of demo areas, where enthusiasts can try the latest models and equipment from some of the industry’s biggest brands. Featuring a woodland mountain bike track and a kids ‘GoRide Zone’ with expert coaches on hand. The event will cater to all, from cycling beginner to dedicated amateurs and professionals.

Charlotte Scoular from Cycle Expo Yorkshire, said: “We are delighted to have Lizzie on board. Her success in her field is unmatched and there’s no one more passionate or fitting to have as our ambassador for what will be another fantastic cycling event for Yorkshire. The Cycle Expo will be a mass celebration of cycling and we are thrilled to have Lizzie in our corner.”

Cycle Expo Yorkshire is set to welcome 20,000 cycling enthusiasts to Harrogate’s Yorkshire Event Centre (YEC) from 12-14 October 2018.
