Belmont Grosvenor School pupil Sofia Snowball will be making a splash when she takes to the stage in York next month.

The 10-year-old, a student in Year 5 at the co-educational Harrogate prep school, has landed a role in We are Theatre’s latest production of The Little Mermaid, which takes place at the Joseph Rowntree Theatre in York.

Sofia will be swapping her school books for song sheets as she transforms herself into a starfish for the show, which opens on 24 June – she’s also been chosen to sing an opening solo for the production.

Sofia said:

All my friends and family are coming to the show, I am a little bit nervous about singing the opening solo but am also really excited about being chosen to be a part of the musical. It’s going to be great.

Sofia is a member of the school’s Curtain Call drama group, studies extra drama lessons, and has piano and singing lessons. She came first at Harrogate Festival for Verse Reading and third for Poetry, with a distinction in her LAMDA.

She is no stranger to the limelight – she’s appeared on TV in a Leapfrog advert and is due to take to the stage in the West End later in the year in a show called Lazy Ace, which is produced by her Saturday drama group the PQA Academy.

Jane Merriman, headteacher at Belmont Grosvenor, said the school was proud of Sofia’a achievements – and wished her luck with her role in The Little Mermaid.

Jane said:

Pupils at Belmont Grosvenor School have many opportunities to take part in music, singing and drama, both inside and outside the classroom, which is great for developing confidence, and promoting self-esteem.

I am sure Sofia will put her drama skills into action and will do herself, and her school, proud. We are all behind her and wishing her lots of luck.
