Spofforth professionals community serves up ‘charity extravaganza’ for Macmillan

10 March 2014

Professionals living in the village of Spofforth have joined forces to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support with a raft of innovative fund raising initiatives planned for this spring.

Spofforth resident, dentist Andy Ruffell, who is based at the Otley Road Dental Practice in Harrogate, is taking to the saddle in May, when he will cycle from John O’Groats to Lands End in aid of the charity. Sponsorship raised by Dr Ruffell will be boosted by a series of additional fund raising events centred on the village.

Leeds corporate finance boutique, Ethos, whose managing director, Chris Silverwood, is a resident of Spofforth, has pledged to donate the money raised from the firm’s golf day in June, which is expected to amount to around £2,500. Meanwhile, on 29 March, a quiz and auction at Spofforth Memorial Hall will have some unique prizes and items up for auction.

Topping the bill will be the chance to bid for award winning chef Tom Van Zeller, owner of Harrogate’s Montpellier Street eatery, to cook a meal for six people at the winning bidder’s home. For £50 a head, further diners can be added and Mr Van Zeller is also offering his restaurant’s wine list at half the usual price.

Chris Silverwood, who is co-ordinating Spofforth’s fund raising events for Macmillan Cancer Support, said: So many people’s lives have been touched by cancer and they have experienced first hand the superb care that Macmillan nurses deliver to cancer patients and their families. It’s fantastic to see a community coming together like this to raise money for such a worthwhile cause.

We are thrilled to have Tom Van Zeller offering his ‘Van Zeller at Home’ services for our auction and for anyone who can’t make the event, don’t worry you can still be in with a chance of scooping this and plenty of other great prizes as we are accepting pre-auction bids via email. Between Dr Ruffell’s intrepid bike ride, the Ethos golf day and the auction we hope to raise enough money with our charity extravaganza to make a real difference to Macmillan.
