Harrogate man in court following gas leak and solitary lit candle in building

Harrogate – A man is appearing in court today (Monday 4 November 2013) charged with arson with intent to endanger life, following an incident in the early hours of Saturday 2 November 2013.

There was a report of a gas leak on Leyland Road in Harrogate at around 3.45am. Police officers attended and on arrival they immediately smelled gas.

Officers established that no-one was inside the house and as a precaution, they evacuated the adjacent properties to ensure the safety of those residents.

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service also attended the incident and gained entry to the premises along with a gas engineer. They established that in addition to the gas leak, there was also a lit candle in one of the rooms.

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service made the premises safe and no-one was injured as a result of the incident.

Meanwhile, police officers from Harrogate where present at separate address in the town where they arrested a 48-year-old man. He was questioned over the weekend and charged with arson with intent to endanger life. He was remanded in custody to appear at Harrogate Magistrates’ Court today (4 November 2013).
