Drivers asked to avoid Hookstone road while carriageway work is undertaken

Drivers are being asked to avoid Hookstone Road in Harrogate for the next few weeks if at all possible and to be prepared for delays in the area.

Roadworks to upgrade and extend services under the carriageway mean that the junction with Leeds Road will be reduced to two lanes until the work is complete.

The works are being carried out by the developers of the new Marks and Spencer Simply Food store on the former Nidd Vale Garage site as part of the conditions placed on planning permission.

The scheme is being development managed by St James Securities Limited. Construction Director Dan Murray said:

We need to extend the service infrastructure under the road and the only way we are able to do this safely is to remove the east bound lane at the junction and use the two west-bound lanes for two-way traffic.

We recognise that at certain times of the day this work will cause traffic disruption and we appeal to drivers who can use another route to do so. Unfortunately there is no other way to carry out the required work and delays are to be expected.

The work has been programmed to follow the completion of unrelated Northern Gas Networks’ roadworks on Hookstone Road and is being organised by GMI Construction which aims to complete before the Christmas rush.
