Tom Gordon MP celebrates 20,000th piece of Casework for Harrogate and Knaresborough residents

4 September 2026

Constituency office marks major milestone supporting local residents just over two years since the General Election.

The Office of Tom Gordon, Member of Parliament for Harrogate and Knaresborough, has passed a major milestone, processing their 20,000th piece of casework just over two years after being elected.

The demand for MP advocacy has surged across the country in recent years. Rather than counting automated emails, spam, or general policy petitions, this 20,000 milestone represents individual, verified cases where a local constituent required direct assistance. Mr Gordon’s dedicated local team now opens thousands of these distinct files every year, directly representing residents before dozens of institutions, companies, and government departments.

The intensive local operation runs alongside Mr Gordon’s legislative duties in Westminster. He is required to spend much of his week in London when Parliament is sitting—voting on laws, speaking in debates, and scrutinising legislation—while his casework team ensures individual local requests are investigated and actioned daily.

When a resident hits a wall with a government department, the council, the NHS, a landlord, or a utility company, and cannot get anywhere on their own, they can bring the problem to Tom. The office then opens a formal case on their behalf, channelling the legal authority of an MP to challenge organisations and push for a swift resolution.

Tom’s Senior Caseworker, Chris Howden, explained that in a typical week the team tackles a vast range of complex local challenges. “Some cases are sorted out with a single phone call or email to a dedicated agency hotline. Others involve deep advocacy running for months,” he said.

Recent key successes for Harrogate and Knaresborough constituents include:

  • Securing a £22,000 back-payment for a constituent’s son from the Department for Work and Pensions.
  • Ensuring a widow successfully received her late husband’s pension in full.
  • Supporting a resident through a severe workplace GDPR breach.
  • Securing a permanent home to safely reunite a mother with her children, who were living in a caravan without electricity or running water.
  • Reinstating vital care hours for a resident after they were cut by North Yorkshire Council.
  • Securing a constituent’s top school place for their daughter following a local appeal.
  • Resolving severe administrative delays with the DVLA medical team to get multiple constituents their driving licences returned.

Tom is keen for even more residents to know that their MP is someone they can turn to, noting that vulnerable individuals who stand to gain the most from this advocacy are often the least likely to realise they can ask for help.

Tom Gordon MP said:

Twenty thousand cases mean twenty thousand times somebody in Harrogate or Knaresborough needed a person in their corner.

Some of it changes lives, like keeping a family in their home. Some of it is a smaller thing that nobody else would have picked up. We treat all of it as important because, to the person sitting in front of us, it is. I am incredibly proud of my team for getting here so quickly, and we are not slowing down.

Chris Howden, Senior Caseworker, added:

Behind every one of these 20,000 cases is a real person who turned to us at a time of stress or confusion. We are a small team, but we are proud of how many people we have been able to support, and we will keep working every day to make a real difference for local residents.
