Not-for-profit care provider, Harrogate Neighbours and Knaresborough Library, have joined forces to launch Puzzles for Pensioners – an initiative which aims to bring companionship, conversation and cognitive stimulation to isolated older people.
A recent report by North Yorkshire Council has highlighted social isolation and loneliness as a significant concern for older people, particularly those living in rural communities, and has called for more community initiatives that promote companionship and social engagement.
A simple jigsaw puzzle could become the missing piece in helping tackle loneliness among older people across Knaresborough.
The new community initiative is designed to reduce social isolation and keep older people mentally active through donated puzzles, books, crosswords and games.
The campaign, funded by the Knaresborough Rotary Club, is calling on local people to donate unwanted jigsaw puzzles and games to Knaresborough Library from Thursday 4th September.
The donated puzzles will be delivered to those who opt in, as well as those receiving Harrogate Neighbours’ Meals on Wheels service in Knaresborough, giving them an enjoyable activity to complete at home.
In addition to the donation of puzzles, throughout the month, Harrogate Neighbours’ development and communications manager, Jamie Nicholson-Ruther, will spend time visiting older people who opt in to the scheme, playing puzzles together while providing valuable companionship and a friendly face.
By encouraging conversation alongside stimulating activities, the initiative aims to help older people remain mentally engaged, improve wellbeing and identify any changes in health or mood before they become more serious concerns.
Jamie Nicholson-Ruther from Harrogate Neighbours said:
For many of the people we visit, a friendly chat can be just as valuable as the meal itself. A puzzle gives us something to enjoy together, sparks conversation and creates a real sense of achievement when it’s finished. It’s amazing how something so simple can brighten someone’s week.
We’re hoping local people will have a look in their cupboards and donate any puzzles they’re no longer using. They might be gathering dust in someone’s loft, but they could make a huge difference to somebody who spends much of their day alone.
North Yorkshire Council’s executive member for libraries, Cllr Simon Myers, said:
Libraries have always been about bringing communities together, and we’re delighted to become a collection point for puzzle donations. We hope local people will support the campaign and help spread a little kindness.
Loneliness isn’t always visible. Many older people can go days, or even weeks, without meaningful conversation, and that’s something we want to help change.
This initiative is about much more than puzzles. It’s about creating moments of connection, bringing joy into someone’s week and helping people continue living independently in their own homes for longer.
Local people are encouraged to donate complete jigsaw puzzles suitable for adults by dropping them into the dedicated collection point at Knaresborough Library from 4th September onwards.
