Football fever has officially kicked off at a care home in Harrogate as residents enjoyed an afternoon of sporting fun.
Care UK’s Harcourt Gardens, on Harcourt Road, took to the field to take part in seated football and join the nation in celebrating a huge summer of sport.
The day began with a range of refreshments prepared by the home’s head chef.
Fully refuelled, residents and team members put their penalty-taking skills to the test in the home’s lounge. After some friendly competition, former Manchester City academy footballer and resident Barrie Roberts claimed victory.
Reflecting on England’s iconic 1966 World Cup victory, Barrie recalled the day clearly. It was a Saturday, and he had been attending a dance competition. As soon as it finished, he hopped on his bike and pedalled home as fast as he could, to watch the big match.
Looking back on the historic win, Barrie summed it up in one word: “Brilliant!”
Throughout the day, residents shared stories of their most cherished sporting memories. One of those was Mike Casey, who reflected on his impressive 36-year career as a sports journalist for the Yorkshire Post.
After watching the seated football from the sidelines and analysing the players’ skills, Mike brought the day full circle by sharing articles from his reporting days, many of which covered Leeds United.
The event was part of Care UK’s ‘Goal-den Moments’ initiative, which aims to bring generations together and encourage residents to reminisce about cherished football memories with the local community while sharing new experiences together.

It was a wonderful opportunity to gather for a day of matchday magic. It was truly heartwarming to watch residents reminisce and share their favourite football stories from years gone by.
