31 May 2026
NORTHALLERTON, UK – A 26-year-old man from County Durham has been charged with multiple offences, including two counts of rape, following a fast-moving investigation into an assault in Northallerton.
The suspect was remanded in custody and appeared before York Magistrates’ Court on Saturday, 30 May 2026. In addition to the rape charges, he faces counts of wounding with intent and aggravated burglary.
High-Profile Police Search
The charges follow a significant police response that began in the early hours of Thursday, 28 May 2026. Officers were called to a residential property in Northallerton at 1:17 am following reports that a woman had been sexually assaulted.
A large-scale, high-profile search of the area involving a significant number of officers culminated in the arrest of the 26-year-old suspect on Thursday evening.
Two other local men—one in his 20s and another in his 40s—were initially arrested on Thursday morning in connection with the enquiry. Following comprehensive police investigations, both individuals have been completely eliminated from the case and released with no further action.
The victim of the assault is currently receiving dedicated assistance from specialist support services.
Police Move to Reassure Public
Addressing local anxieties, Inspector Rory Sadler of the Hambleton Neighbourhood Policing Team emphasised that the attack was an isolated incident. He also moved to dispel unverified reports circulating within the local community.
Inspector Sadler said:
This has been a hugely distressing incident for the victim and has caused alarm in the wider community.
It’s been a fast-moving investigation and there will continue to be a visible police presence in the area to reassure concerned residents.
Commenting on local speculation, Inspector Sadler added:
I’d also like to provide some clarity about rumours circulating in the community. A white British man from the Durham area has been arrested in connection with this incident.
I’m aware there is some speculation about links to a separate burglary in the Hambleton area. However, I can confirm police are treating these incidents as unrelated.
I’d stress that the incident in Northallerton is isolated and we are not looking for anyone else as part of our investigation.
