Ripon Museum Trust (RMT) is inviting applications for new Trustees, including a Treasurer, to join its Board at a pivotal time in the charity’s history.
RMT cares for and operates three unique heritage sites in the heart of Ripon city centre, North Yorkshire: Ripon Workhouse Museum & Garden, Ripon Prison & Police Museum, and Ripon Courthouse Museum. Individually and together, the museums tell powerful and often challenging stories about law, order, justice, and welfare—exploring how these themes have shaped society in the past and continue to resonate today.
As an independent charity and accredited museum, RMT is proud of its strong community links, growing visitor numbers, and the positive impact of its learning, volunteering, and engagement programmes. The Trust’s vision is to use the historic buildings and collections in its care to inspire curiosity, provoke debate, and encourage reflection—helping people connect past and present in meaningful ways.
This is an especially exciting moment to join the Board. In September 2024, RMT was awarded £2.5 million from The National Lottery Heritage Fund to deliver its Inspiration for a Fairer Future project, a landmark £3.3 million initiative supported by match funding. The project will transform visitor experiences, attract more diverse audiences, and safeguard Ripon’s unique heritage for generations to come.
To help realise this vision, RMT is seeking new Trustees who can bring fresh perspectives, valuable expertise, and a shared passion for heritage, education, and social justice. The role of Treasurer offers an opportunity for someone with strong financial skills to make a significant contribution to the charity’s governance and strategic direction.
Chair of Ripon Museum Trust, Robert Ling, said:
This is a pivotal time for Ripon Museum Trust as we embark on the most ambitious project in our history. We are looking for Trustees who can help us deliver on our vision, ensuring our museums remain dynamic, inclusive and relevant to future generations.
RMT particularly welcomes applications from people of all backgrounds, cultures and lived experiences. Prior trustee or museum sector experience is not essential—enthusiasm, integrity, and a willingness to contribute are highly valued, and many professional skills are transferable.
