North Yorkshire’s libraries will celebrate National Bookstart Week from 8 to 14 June with a series of jungle-themed events and activities.
Working with the Book Trust, libraries will host a series of jungle adventures ranging from Jungle Japes at Leyburn library on Saturday 13 June from 10.15am to 10.45am to a Batty about Books Rumble in the Jungle at Harrogate library on Friday 12 June from 2pm to 4pm. Activities will include special stories, elephant mask-making, jungle rhymes and colouring sheets.
Throughout the year, North Yorkshire libraries help to open up the exciting world of sharing stories, books and rhymes through the Bookstart Bear Club, which is free to join for all babies, toddlers and pre-schoolers.
As part of the club, children receive a membership pack with a passport, bookmark and membership certificate. Each time a child attends a story or rhyme time or borrows books or DVDs, they receive a paw print stamp in the passport. On the sixth stamp they are rewarded with a certificate.
“Just ten minutes a day with a book can help children discover a love of reading that can transform their lives, opening their imaginations and helping to prepare them for starting their education,” said County Councillor Chris Metcalfe, executive member for library and information services.
