Over the past 10 days, two incidents have been reported to the police involving a man claiming to be from a double glazing company who called at the homes of a woman in her sixties and a woman in her eighties in the Spofforth and Harrogate areas.
The man has been allowed into their properties on the basis of selling or measuring up for double glazing. Following the visits, the householders have discovered items, including cash and jewellery, have been stolen from their homes. Police are investigating any links between the caller and the thefts.
As part of their investigations, officers want to hear from anyone in the Harrogate area if they have been cold called by anyone selling double glazing recently. They also ask any residents to pass on any recently delivered double glazing leaflets or literature to Harrogate CID.
Anyone with any information is asked to contact North Yorkshire Police on 101, select option 2 and ask for Harrogate CID. The investigating officer is Detective Constable Claire Brown, please quote incident number 12120214539.
Alternatively, you can pass information anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
In the meantime, officers are asking residents to be extra vigilant. If you are looking to purchase glazing please ensure you use a reputable company recommended by family or friends.
Ensure you ask for Identification from the representatives and be mindful of allowing any stranger unsupervised access to your home. Please consider having a friend or family member present if you have representatives in your property.
Do not be afraid to say no to cold callers. If you are not sure who is at your door, don’t open it. A genuine caller will understand if you do not wish to answer your door.
