Theakston Nidderdale Cricket League – week 19 review

The rain falls mainly in Nidderdale it would seem as Alne take 3rd place as the leaders are all rained off. Pannal batted first and hung on to take a point with 108-9. Carl Wilson top scored with 42 and Toby Stirke took 4-9 off just 8 overs. Then in reply Alne lost Brad Scott early but Eddie Myers (73*) and Jim Kenny (19*) knocked off the runs. At the other end of the table Goldsborough are moving in the right direction with another win, this time at the expense of Bishop Thornton. Thornton batted first and Andrew Cullen (69) and Will Wray (17) had to contend with a long interruption for rain. The match was reduced to 27 overs and Thornton closed on 110-4.

It is always easier batting second in these rain affected matches and Goldsborough made 113-2 to take the win. John Moorhouse spanked 105 for Burton Leonard in their total of 186-7 against Ouseburn but the home side had Sam Parker (65) Chris Morrison (55*) and Jamie Bryant (50*) to thank as they eased past the target on 190-2. Helperby beat Spofforth by 22 runs after posting a total of 107-8 off 36 overs, Joe Kinsella making 31. The Spofforth batting was then demolished by Matt Cavanagh 4-24 as only Jonny Ross with 29 could put up any resistance. So with 3 games left and a maximum 18 points available, 7 teams are still in the relegation battle.

Congratulations to Masham who without stepping onto the field are crowned Champions of Division 2 and return to the top flight at the first time of asking. There are 4 teams in the hunt for the last remaining promotion spot but only Newby Hall could manage a game and took full advantage by beating Knaresborough Forest in a game reduced to 30 overs due to a long rain interruption. Forest were asked to bat by Newby and posted 96-8. Craig Robson held up an end with 25. Dan Herron took 3-28. Then Newby’s David Kelly hit 74* and took the game away, and the points. Newby are up into 5th and could be in line for a surprise return to the 1st division. No other games were played to a completion.
