Musicians and singers from eight junior schools have joined together to rehearse and perform a concert in one day!

The 160 pupils from across the North of England descended on Harrogate’s Ashville Junior School for the annual HMC (Headmasters and Headmistresses Conference) Music Day.

Split into three sections – choir, string orchestra and wind band – the Year 5 and 6 students spent the morning getting to know each other and the various pieces of music they would either play or sing.

After one joint rehearsal, the pupils, under the guidance of music teachers from the participating schools, put on a concert for parents, teachers and classes from the host school in Ashville College’s Soothill Hall.

The Harry Potter theme was one of the most popular tunes performed by the brass and woodwind section, whilst the strings played classic Latin-American ballroom dancing music and the choir sang Feelin’ Good, While the Tanks Roll By and Pop Idol.

Ashville College Director of Music Anna Wilby said: Once again we were delighted to host this annual event where pupils from as far away as Hull and Newcastle come together for a fantastic day of making music.

The majority of HMC events we take part in are competitive in their very nature. This is one of the exceptions as it is centered on collaboration.

The students worked incredibly hard, from the moment they first saw the pieces they were to perform in the afternoon, right through to the final bow!

They put on a superb concert and can be incredibly proud of their achievement.

The participating schools this year were Barlborough Hall, Silcoates, Royal Grammar, Barnard Castle, Pocklington, GSAL, Hymers and hosts Ashville Junior School.
