Harrogate schoolgirls take to the stage in the West End of London

22 November 2016

Two Harrogate schoolgirls took to the West End stage to perform in a one-off show at one of London’s most famous theatres.

Sofia Snowball and Annabel Wass, both pupils at Belmont Grosvenor School in Harrogate, travelled to the capital to take part in The Lazy Ace – a musical show performed by members of their out-of-school drama group.

Year 6 pupil Sofia took one of the principle roles of Buzz in the London show while Annabel, 9, was one of the street kids.

Both girls – who study drama at co-educational prep school Belmont Grosvenor – loved their experience of the West End Stage.

Said Annabel:

There can’t be many children who have the chance to perform at a world-famous theatre – it was really fantastic.

I really enjoyed the performance as it was so special – I love singing and drama.

The Lazy Ace was staged at Her Majesty’s Theatre – in the heart of the West End and home to the long-running production of The Phantom of the Opera.

Both girls, on top of their drama, singing and musical instrument tuition at Belmont Grosvenor, are members of a Saturday drama group the PQA Academy – which staged the children’s musical.

Sofia is no stranger to the professional stage – earlier in the year she performed at York’s Joseph Rowntree Theatre in The Little Mermaid. The youngster has also appeared on TV in a Leapfrog advert.

Jane Merriman, Headteacher at ‘outstanding’ Belmont Grosvenor said everyone at school was proud of the girls’ achievements.

Jane Merriman said:

All our children here at Belmont Grosvenor have opportunities to perform on stage, from taking part in end-of-term productions and nativity plays to class assemblies which will have stood both Sofia and Annabel in good stead for their professional debut.

It sounds like they had a wonderful time and it was a great experience for them both – and we are very proud of them.
