The government recently made an announcement that vet prescription fees will be capped at £21.
The announcement follows an in-depth investigation by the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) which has also said practices will have to publish price lists for services while a new price comparison website will be introduced to help boost competition.
Dr Philip Simon, owner and veterinary surgeon at Your Family Vets on Wetherby Road in Knaresborough is also in full support of the recommendation that vet practices must publish a “comprehensive” price list for standard services – including consultations and common procedures – something that he and his team have been doing since opening in November 2024.
With the sector being dominated by large corporate chains which controls around 60 per cent of the pet-care market, recent reports have also raised the issue on whether the pet-care market is giving customers value for money.
Dr Philip said:
Recent headlines and reports have certainly focused the issue currently facing the veterinary sector and that for pet owners.
As an independent, family-run vet practice, we’ve been running an open price policy since we opened in November 2024 and means owners can make more informed decisions when they have to provide care for their pet.
Our advice is to shop around and where possible, use independently run practices. They aren’t under pressure from any corporate paymasters who just want to see as big a profit as possible.
Also, being independent, allows us to focus on what matters most, honest, compassionate care that always puts owners’ pets first.
Other recommendations from the CMA also included that written estimate must be provided in advance for any treatment expected to cost £500 or more, including aftercare costs, plus an itemised bill.
They also said that all vet businesses must make clear whether they are part of a group or an independent business.
Dr Philip added:
We know the cost of veterinary care can be a worry, which is why we aim to be open and transparent, so that owners can choose the best options for their pet. This is also why we offer our Ultimate Wellness Plan, which includes unlimited vet and nurse consultations, helping to spread the cost of care throughout the year.
