The North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR) has officially confirmed the reopening of Bridge 42, restoring its complete 24-mile heritage line service from Pickering to Whitby. Following an essential closure for safety inspections, passengers can once again experience the entire journey through the heart of the North York Moors National Park.

To celebrate the return of the full line, the charity has launched an accessible new pricing structure featuring a Kids Go Free offer and School Holiday Saver Rates to help families cut the cost of travel.

Exploring the Full 24-Mile Route

With the line fully operational, heritage steam and diesel services will connect passengers to some of Yorkshire’s most iconic destinations:

  • Whitby: The famous coastal terminus boasting a bustling harbour, independent shops, and the historic Whitby Abbey.
  • Grosmont: A charming village where visitors can access the historic Rail Trail walking route, tour the NYMR engine sheds, and visit the UK’s oldest surviving Co-operative.
  • Pickering & Beyond: Journey through picturesque stations including Levisham and Goathland.

New Ticket Options & Family Savings

The NYMR has streamlined its ticketing to maximize affordability for families:

  • Kids Go Free: Every fare-paying adult can bring one child (aged 4–15) completely free of charge on standard services.
  • School Holiday Savers: Reduced-rate fares are active during peak holiday blocks: 18 July – 6 September and 24 October – 1 November.
  • Flexible Travel: Day Rover tickets allow unlimited “hop-on, hop-off” travel across the entire line, while shorter point-to-point journeys start from just £11.95 per adult.

Save 10% on Booking: Passengers who book their Day Rover tickets more than four days in advance will automatically receive a 10% discount at checkout.

Guarding the Future: The Bridge 42 Appeal

The reopening follows intensive engineering work on Bridge 42, where temporary propping was installed to ensure absolute operational safety. A permanent, full-scale structural repair programme is scheduled to take place during the winter closed season.

To fund this vital infrastructure work, NYMR has launched a major public appeal with a target of £800,000 to secure the long-term future of the historic line.

Laura Strangeway, CEO at the NYMR, commented:

We’re delighted to once again be taking passengers all the way from Pickering to Grosmont and Whitby.

Whether visitors are looking for a short heritage journey or a full day out exploring the line, we’ve got a ticket to suit everyone.

Our heritage railway is at the heart of the local community.

The proactive measures for Bridge 42 reflect our commitment to both operational safety and long-term preservation.

I want to thank our vital suppliers, partners, and the residents of Grosmont for their invaluable support during this period.
