The collision took place at approximately 8.37am this morning (Tuesday 26 May) on the A61 at the junction with Smith Lane, East of Hutton Bank. (North of Ripon)
It involved a black Land Rover Defender, driven by a woman in her 30s from the County Durham area, and a blue and white DAF HGV, driven by a man in his 60s from the Lincolnshire area.
The driver of the Land Rover was airlifted to hospital with life-threatening injuries, where she currently remains.
Following the collision, the road was closed for a number of hours to allow for collision investigation work and recovery to take place. The road has since re-opened.
Police are appealing to anybody who witnessed the incident and has not yet spoken to police, or anyone who may have dashcam footage of the collision or moments leading up to it, including either of the vehicles involved prior to the collision.
