Two late goals from Hull City meant that Town’s participation in this season’s Papa John’s Trophy came to an end last evening at the EnviroVent Stadium.
Simon Weaver made three changes to the side that were victorious over Skelmersdale, as Lloyd Kerry,Aaron Martin and Brendan Kiernan replaced Josh Falkingham,Jack Muldoon and Calvin Miller.
A scoreless first half in which the Tigers had a slight edge, saw Town’s Joe Cracknell make vital saves from Tom Eaves and Martin Samuelson,while Town’s best chance came late in the half when Kiernan sliced a cross wide of the upright.
After the game Simon Weaver bemoaned his sides dullness in front of goal,but the Tigers had no such problems and Cracknell earned himself a “Man of the Match”award from the Supporters Club with a series of fine saves in the second half.
On the hour,Hull introduced James Scott to replace Mayer and he almost made an instant impression,only for him to be denied by yet another excellent save from Cracknell.
A quarter of an hour from time Hull made the breakthrough as Samuelson centred from the right and Scott flicked the ball past Cracknell from close range.
Town countered strongly in search of an equaliser,with Jon Stead,Kevin Lokko and Kiernan all threatening the Tiger’s goal.
But with five minutes left,Town’s Tom Walker brought down Callum Jones inside the area.
Skipper Jones took the penalty himself,blasting the ball into the net to put the result beyond doubt.
