Lidl launches plans for new Harrogate store

5 November 2020

Lidl GB has launched an online public consultation on plans for a new store in Harrogate, ahead of submitting a planning application to Harrogate Borough Council.

The multi-million pound investment will redevelop the site of the former Lookers car dealership on Knaresborough Road. Lidl’s proposals for a modern, spacious supermarket will create around 40 new full and part-time jobs for the local economy.

The new Lidl store would have a 1,263m2 sales area, an in-store bakery, customer toilets and 94 car parking spaces including disabled, parent & child spaces and rapid electric vehicle charging points.

The public are invited to comment on the proposals via a dedicated website www.lidl-harrogate.co.uk and through a leaflet which is being delivered to properties in the area. Residents with questions about the proposals can also call Lidl’s consultation team directly by Freephone number 0800 089 0361.

Lidl’s Regional Property Director, Robert Beaumont, commented:

We have been looking forward to bringing a new store to Harrogate for a while and the former Lookers site is a great location. We are extremely excited about the prospect of opening our first Lidl in the area and serving our fresh, quality and incredibly good value produce to the local community.

Our plans are set to create around 40 new positions which would be fantastic for the local community, and we hope that as many people as possible are able to join us for this ‘virtual’ public consultation. We look forward to sharing and discussing our plans with everyone.

The new supermarket forms part of the company’s £1.45bn investment in its expansion across Great Britain in 2019 and 2020. Its ongoing success shows no signs of slowing, with the latest Kantar Worldpanel results highlighting Lidl’s increase in sales year on year and market share of 6.1%.

  1. Hi, not happy with the proposal. I think we already have a local shops and Morrisons near by. Also it’s will create a traffic as knaresborough road already a very busy road.
    Thanks

  2. I think its a brilliant use of the proposed site. There are so many empty shops in this area already. Lidl is great and we need a local super store as Morrisons is too far to go for elderley and disabled.

  3. It would be great place as the old Macolls shop is still
empty and it would be ideal for quite a lot of ppl living around the areas as ppl don’t always have transport so it would be a nice walk for ppl as we have to get buses to Aldi on skipton road or a bius to knaresborough so I agree to have one

  4. Great use of the site ,competition healthy ,create jobs ,Whilst I have sympathy for the single trader we have to face up to it big chains are here to stay they have competitive prices ,quality produce easy free parking .

  5. Great news. As we travel a lot in Europe in our motorhome we have shopped at Lidl for years. When one finally arrived in Knaresborough we were delighted. Now Harrogate, fantastic, bring it on.

  6. They need to make the building more in line with whats around though. This style of building stands out way too much. Doesn’t look nice.

  7. This is something I completely support, this area needs more shops within walking distance, 100% onboard
