Tom Jones confirms he’s all set for York Concert


York Racecourse have confirmed that Tom Jones will play a headline show this  Friday evening 27 July 2018.

The two-day Music Showcase weekend will feature Tom Jones on Friday evening and Boyzone on Saturday afternoon.

Despite a recent period of ill health, the Welsh singing legend that is Sir Tom Jones, remains set to play on the evening of Friday 27 July; as with many things any updated information would appear on the York website.

After racing on Saturday 28 July, Boyzone will take to the stage. Celebrating twenty-five years together, Ronan, Keith, Mikey and Shane have clocked up six UK Number One singles, more than 13 million record sales and four Brit Awards.

The only evening fixture of the season at York gets underway at 6.00pm on Friday with gates opening at 4pm.

The highlight of a six race card that has increased again in prize money to £125,000; is the tenth running of a Listed race for fillies and mares, the British Stallion Studs EBF Lyric Stakes. On its own, it offers an impressive prize fund of £50,000 and is one of twenty-two contests on the Knavesmire this year supported by The European Breeders’ Fund. Last year’s race was won by the Al Shaqab owned, Entsar, one of the impressive sorts that helped William Haggas to the 2017 Top Trainer title on the Knavesmire.

Also featured on a Friday evening card that has seen prize money grow by more than 10% year on year is a handicap contest over five and a half furlongs that demonstrates Sky Bet’s commitment to The Go Racing In Yorkshire Summer Festival, as this meeting is part of the initiative that links the eight flat courses in the county, over nine days of fantastic sport. The Leeds based online betting firm have also taken the chance to demonstrate their support for the Leeds based children’s charity, Candlelighters.

Lady riders are in the spotlight in the opening race, The York Data Services Silk Series Handicap, as this nationwide initiative that focuses on female riders comes to York under the support of the firm that provide wireless technology solutions at the course.

With two-year-olds being the rationale for The Best One Xtra Local Median Auction Novice Stakes; whilst a competitive handicap takes the name of Irish Thoroughbred Marketing. Confirming that the minimum value of any race at York this season is £15,000 comes a mile handicap, supported by new name to York, Expert Installations.


Further prize money increases in Saturday’s quality seven-race programme means the prize money for the two days will approach £400,000. The action starts at 2-05 p.m. with the entire card sponsored by Sky Bet – the Leeds based firm who are also the recently announced sponsors of the Ebor Handicap at York.

The principal race on Saturday is the thirteenth running of The Sky Bet York Stakes, with prize money of  £120,000; this Group 2 contest is run over the extended one mile and a quarter. Won last year by Success Days, a breakthrough star for Ken Condon’s County Kildare operation.  According to recent history Saturday’s victor could reappear in the best ten furlong race in Great Britain and the richest race of York’s season, the £1,000,000 Juddmonte International on Wednesday 22 August.

Also featured on Saturday’s strong card is the fastest race of the two days, the Sky Bet Dash. This £50,000 sprint is over six furlongs. Last year’s winner was Flying Pursuit, yet another of the quality sprinters trained by Tim Easterby just outside Malton.

Former racehorses now in the care of ‘New Beginnings’, a Yorkshire-based charity, are in attendance on Saturday, enabling racegoers to see them at close hand.



Several giant screens will enable racegoers to enjoy even more of the action from both the track and the stage on both days, as well as following the action from the other big Saturday race meeting at Ascot.

Away from the main stage, there will be music from both Doctor Jazz and The Players. The popular ‘Punter’s Panel’ takes place prior to racing helping racegoers to identify possible winners.
