Steve Scarre has been appointed as President of the Harrogate District Chamber of Commerce, succeeding Mike Proctor.
The chamber has made the president appointment a 2-year position, where as previously it was for a year. This is to allow more time for them to find their feet and get things done.
Steve is a qualified accountant and retired in 2011 from being the Vice-principal of Kirkless College. Although at the time he felt he had done the daily commute to Huddersfield long enough, he wasn’t ready to retire and setup a mediation business, CSS Mediation.
For me it was a natural move into mediation a it had been a big part of my work at Kirklees College, often mediating between students or between students and lecturers.
He joined the Chamber in 2012 as a way to meet other business’s, before being part of the Management Committee and Vice-President two years ago.
Steve has many other active interests, he is chair of Horticap and sits on the committees and actively helps with both the Harrogate Christmas Market and Yorkshire Business Market – contributing a great deal of time to all those activities. At the Christmas Market you will find him each day at 7am adorned with a high-viz vest helping the traders.
Steve has a grown-up daughter and has recently become a grandfather, he is a passionate advocate of the town.
I want to make a difference at the chamber and to do things differently. We need build the membership by making the chamber a more attractive proposition.
For me, it’s about working with honest, empathy, respect and trust. Particularly for new businesses it’s important to have a lot of empathy in the challenges that they face.
