Harrogate choir set to rock town hall twice

23 March 2017

A two-day residency will see hundreds of Harrogate singers bring a unique take on the biggest rock hits to audiences at Leeds Town Hall.

Rock Up and Sing! will perform One Vision, a set of songs by Queen, David Bowie, Metallica, Guns n Roses, Meat Loaf and more. The two performances will be on Saturday, July 15 at 7.30pm and Sunday, July 16 at 2pm.

More than 300 choir members from Harrogate and Skipton are preparing for the concerts, which mark eight years since the family of choirs was founded.

Director Rhiannon Gayle said:

As the name suggests, Rock Up and Sing! has always focused on rock music, and we’ve had pop and soul songs in our repertoire too.

One Vision will be very much rock-focused, with our take on some absolute classics from across the decades. Our choir members are all ages and from a wide range of backgrounds, but they’ve really embraced the chance to take on the attitude and power behind these rock anthems – and with a live band, the results are going to be spectacular.

I can’t wait to unleash them on the audiences in Leeds this July!

The two summer concerts represent a return to Leeds Town Hall for Rock Up and Sing!, following a hugely successful Christmas performance in 2015. The choir members have been keen to return ever since.

Through both concerts Rock Up and Sing will be supporting St Gemma’s Hospice, which provides vital expert palliative care to those with life-threatening illnesses, as well as support to their families and loved ones, education and research.

Rhiannon said:

St Gemma’s Hospice is the largest hospice in Yorkshire helping so many local families through the toughest of times. They have staggering costs of over £9.7 million each year, a large proportion of which comes from fundraising, so we wanted to help in our small way by supporting them through our concert.

Leeds Town Hall is a fantastic venue with stunning acoustics that will really make the most of our voices, especially with the support of the band. I hope people will come along to enjoy our take on some brilliant rock songs and help us raise money for a great cause at the same time.

Tickets are £14 for adults or £7 for under 16s and are available from Leeds Town Hall box office – call 0113 224 3801 or visit www.leeds.gov.uk/townhall
