Formic acid chemical spill near Ripley

The Fire Service were called to a report of a chemical spill in Ripley at 22:52 on 12 June 2015.

20 to 30 litres of formic acid had leaked from a barrel which had fallen off a tractor and then hit 2 vehicles travelling behind on the A61

Fire Crews from Harrogate and Tadcaster were initially mobilised followed by a further 3 appliances and another heavy rescue unit – these appliances were mobilised from Summerbridge, Ripon, Knaresborough and Malton.

All occupants of the vehicals were checked over by the ambulance service as fire service crews began to containing and clearing the spillage.

6 fire fighters wore breathing apparatus, 4 gas tight suits with the full decontamination showers also in use.

The last appliance left this incident at around 02:40
