Call out for young performers to stage prestigious Jubilee show

29 August 2012

Young performers are in demand for a prestigious show to celebrate culture and style over the last 60 years.

North Yorkshire County Council’s Youth Support Service is currently holding workshops across the Harrogate and Craven areas for young people aged 11-19 to get involved in music, dance, drama, and the visual arts. The aim is to prepare for a major show called Diamonds on the Soles of their Shoes.

The show is designed to celebrate 60 years of British fashion, music and dance and will take place in The Royal Hall Harrogate on Wednesday 31st October 2012 and at the Glusburn Arts Centre in Skipton on Friday 2nd November.

Young people, regardless of experience, are invited to come along to the workshops. The Youth Support Service is particularly on the look-out for dancers, singers, aspiring fashion or costume designers, models and make up artists. It would also welcome any adults who can help out in making costumes for the show.

County Councillor Arthur Barker, North Yorkshire’s Executive Member for the Youth Support Service said:

This is a wonderful opportunity for young people to get involved and show off their abilities as well as learn new skills with our youth service experts for these exciting performances. We have a wealth of talent among young people in North Yorkshire and this will be a great project to be part of.

Different areas in Harrogate and Craven will become responsible for researching and portraying a different decade, so that Knaresborough’s youth service will become responsible for portraying the 50s, Skipton the 60s and the year 2000, Ripon the 80s and the Harrogate youth service responsible for the 70s and the 90s.

The workshops are being held every week through to October 26th:

  • Monday 5-7.30pm at Trax Young People’s Centre, Harrogate: for designing and making costumes/props and doing stage make-up
  • Tuesday 6.30-9pm at Skipton Youth Centre: for dance/band/fashion/singing with training by the county council’s Connecting Youth Culture (CYC) artists
  • Thursday 5-7.30pm at Starbeck Youth Centre, Harrogate: dance/singing with CYC artists
