Theakston Nidderdale Cricket League – week 17 review

12 August 2012

Division 1

Nearly 500 runs were scored in the game between Spofforth and Alne but hundreds from Spoff’s Nethersole (102) and Ross (104) wasn’t enough to stop Alne taking the points. Nethersole and Ross put on 213 for the 3rd wicket to see the home side up to 246-4. Brad Scott and Toby Stirke taking 2 wickets each for the visitors. In reply, Alne’s openers Brad Scott (53) and Richard Hutchinson (58) put on 111 for the first wicket. Pete Carr chipped in with 47* to see Alne win by 4 wickets.

Hampsthwaite are still out in front after a 7 wicket win at Goldsborough. ‘boro batted first posting 215-7. Duncan Morrell (40), Jake Agar (35) and Luke Ryan (32) were in the runs. Hampsthwaite are looking strong but at 30-2 may have been thinking the worst. Richard Barratt (76) and Andy Taylor (72) settled things down and saw Hampsthwaite home. Dacre Banks 198-8 saw off Bishop Thornton 144-8 thanks to Lee Saddique( 54) but Max Sharp fought back with 3-13.

Andrew Cullen made 46 for Thornton but W Rasheed 3-24 and Steve Lawrence 3-49 did the damage with the ball. Blubberhouses slipped up against Ouseburn and are now in 3rd spot. Bash Khan (67) and Mark McEneaney (45) contributed to a decent total of 223-8. Ouseburn hit back through Tom Parker (130) and Olie Rose (38) to pass the post at 225-3.

Helperby came unstuck against a resurgent Killinghall thanks to Richard Danby’s 4-41. Posting 114-9 Killinghall were always in with a chance but as batsmen came and went and a spell of 4-41 from Matt Cavanagh, Killinghall sneaked home with 116-6. Pannal are not safe from the drop yet but a win against Burton Leonard who are down in the bottom 2 means there is increasing daylight between then and the relegation zone. Pannal made 242-8 thanks to Jon Smailes (63), Carl Wilson (60) and John Strover (36). Neil Blaken took 3-28. Burton Leonard hung on for a batting point and ended up on 206-7. Jon Moorhouse top scored with 76 and James Townsend made 34.

Division 2

Bolton Abbey are making a bid for promotion back to the big time after a 6 wicket win over relegation zone Ripley. Batting first Ripley made 118 all out thanks to Ben Parkinson’s 4-41 and Rishabh Jain’s 4-15. Bolton Abbey then cruised home to 119-4 and Sam Stewart’s 35. Birstwith made 213-8 with Pete Hardisty (78) George Hirst (37) and Tom Croston (30). The home side were in some trouble at 65-5 but Hardisty and Croston put on 104 for the 6th wicket.

Michael Elgin took 3-30. It was the Tom Simpson show in the second innings as he went unbeaten on 105. Nick Wain took 3-50 but it wasn’t enough. The wheels have come off Darley’s season after another defeat, this time at the hands of Harrogate Strays. Batting first, Darley made 197-9 with Andy Gott making 67* and Jon Rice 59. Jake Edwards took 3-27, Marcus Fox 3-42 and Olie Basset 3-24. Strays then had contributions from Ben Sedgley (93*) and Ben Kempley (33). Mike Beecroft took 3-45. It is looking like Masham will bounce back to Division 1 at the first time of asking. Masham electing to bat and set off like Usain Bolt ,with Rees smashing 54 in the first 10 overs but was then undone by the guile of Chris Brown (1-40). Raskelf then came back into the game with a good spell of bowling from Matthew Sigsworth (4 -41) and leaving Masham teetering on 73 for 5, up stepped Stef Bramley back out of early retirement with a majestic innings of 78 and with help from the tail secured a score of 203 for 9. Raskelf’s BeeGee lookalike Reynolds was going well on 38 but an ill advised run ended his innings and once Matt Sigsworth(34) was removed the game ground to a halt.

Top bowler for Masham was again the “Mad Hatter” Michael Rees taking 4-16. Sharow welcomed local rivals Newby Hall and batting first posted 185-5. Ady Monk (53), Joel Middleton (44), Stuart Newstead (37) and Rob Murray (31) all made handy scores. David Kelly took 3-29 Newby Hall then passed the total and win by just 1 wicket with 189-9 David Kelly again showing his class with the bat making an unbeaten 100. Ricky Simms took 4-48.
