'Flying' success for Great Ouseburn Pub with £1000 raised for charityThe Crown at Great Ouseburn are ‘riding high’ this week after their Great Yorkshire Cook Off, held on Tuesday 22nd May, in aid of Yorkshire Air Ambulance, raised over £1000.

The event, which was held at The White Rose Awards, Yorkshire Pub of the Year 2011, had been organised by husband and wife team, Liz and Paul Jackson. The nail bighting cook off saw three local colleges put their top student’s culinary skills to the test, as they battled it out to be crowned Yorkshire’s Student Chef of the Year.

Cooking up a storm was Ben Cooke from Doncaster College, Rosanna Eastwood from York College and Servanne Hooson from Yorkshire Coast College. The superstar students were asked to devise and prepare a starter, main course or dessert, which were served to a prestigious line up including of local food writers, restaurant reviewers, journalists and top notch industry experts.

After an impressive evening of outstanding food and wine, the scores were counted and the results were announced, with Ben Cooke from Doncaster College pipping his fellow students to the post by a heart stopping half point and to bag the title of Yorkshire’s Student Chef of the Year.

Ben, who has been studying at Doncaster College for 2 years said:

I was already over the moon to have been given the opportunity to cook for influential foodies such as Catherine Scott, Jill Turton, John Moorhouse and Amanda Wragg, that’s not to mention working in the kitchens of Yorkshire’s Pub of the Year.

It was just the icing on the cake ton win this title.

As well as the Yorkshire’s Student Chef of the Year title, Liz and Paul have also offered Ben a work experience position at The Crown, along with presenting him with a host of Chefs’ goodies including signed Chefs whites from James Martin, a £100 catering supplies voucher from Fishers of York and Chef Ingredients Starter kit from MSK, plus a range of other Chef prizes.

Liz said: 

The event has been a huge success, we’re are overwhelmed by the money we have been able raise for Yorkshire Air Ambulance, and we’d like to say a huge thank you for everybody who supported the event.

But the students really were the stars of the show, so a huge congratulations to each of them. As for Ben, we think he’s definitely one to watch.

The food was followed by an impressive charity auction, supported by sponsors such as Best Western, Estrella, Timothy Tailor, Rudgate Brewery and Black Sheep Brewery, who all donating prizes to the event.

Tony Dovestone, North Yorkshire Regional Fundraiser at Yorkshire Air Ambulance was delighted with the money raised at the event:

Yorkshire Air Ambulance relies on the support of regional donations, so we were thrilled when Liz and Paul informed us that they would be donating the money raised to our charity.

The event was a great success and we would like to say a special thank you to everybody who donated and placed bids in the charity auction.
