Fatal collision A1 south-bound Allerton Park

TrafficThis is an update following the collision on the A1 south-bound near Allerton Park this morning (junction 47).

The collision, which was reported at 8.30am today (Wednesday 28 December 2011) involved a silver car which had stopped on the carriageway and a HGV which collided with the car.

The male driver and sole occupant of the car was stood on the carriageway at the time, sadly he died at the scene as a result of the collision.

Police investigating the collision are appealing for anyone who witnessed the collision or the car or HGV prior to the crash to contact them.

Officers need to establish why the man had stopped and got out of his car and are appealing for anyone who remembers seeing a stationary silver car and a man on the south-bound carriageway this morning, to also contact them.

Any witnesses are asked to call North Yorkshire Police on 101, select option 2 and ask for TC Steve Gardner.

No-one else was injured.

The HGV driver was arrested in connection with the crash.

The road remains closed and is not expected to reopen until this afternoon. Diversions are in place at junction 48 along the A168, with traffic rejoining the A1 at junction 46.

The northbound carriageway was closed for a short period of time but has since reopened.
