Fatal collision near Harrogate on A61

Police are appealing for witnesses following a fatal road traffic collision on the A61 in the Harrogate area.

It occurred at just after 2.30pm on Sunday 24 July 2011 between North Rigton and Harrogate involving two vehicles, a red Alfa Romeo Spider and a silver 3 series BMW.

At the time of the incident the BMW was heading towards Harrogate and as a result of the incident collided with a tree, the Alfa Romeo was travelling in the opposite direction and came to rest upside down.

The 30-year-old man from Leeds driving the Alfa Romeo was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

The 77-year-old woman driving the BMW received serious injuries which are not believed to be life threatening. She was taken to Harrogate District Hospital where she remains in a stable condition.

The name of the man who died has not been released.

Traffic Constable Rick Harper, of the force’s Roads Policing Group, said: “This is a tragic incident which has resulted in the death of a man and left a woman recovering from her injuries in hospital.

“I am appealing to anyone who witnessed the collision or saw the manner of driving of either vehicle prior to the incident to contact the police as a matter of urgency.”
