Search is on for Yorkshire’s brightest young stars

The search for Yorkshire’s brightest young stars got under way today (Thursday 19 May) with the opening of nominations for the 2011 Yorkshire Young Achievers , sponsored by McCormicks Solicitors of .

The quest to find the region’s most deserving under 35-year-olds was launched by Yorkshire actress and former winner Malandra Burrows and one of last year’s winners, George Stocker, who joined ITV Yorkshire’s Calendar team to for nominations.

Chairman Peter McCormick OBE said: “If you know someone who really deserves recognition for what they have achieved, we would be delighted to hear their story. This is the 19th year of the and we have heard about some truly remarkable achievements over the years, not least from the previous winners who joined us today.”

George Stocker, 12, of Little Ribston near , was 2010 Youngster of the Year. George has raised nearly £50,000 for Yorkshire children’s Candlelighters after battling a brain tumour.

The Awards recognise outstanding young people in the region aged under 35 who have made an impact, whether nationally, regionally or locally. To date they have raised more than £800,000 for youngsters in Yorkshire.

They are open to young people who live, work or were born in Yorkshire and celebrate achievements in the fields of business, sport, education and the arts, in overcoming adversity and achieving fame and fortune. Those with a lower profile have been brought into the limelight thanks to the Unsung Hero award, while there is always a Youngster of the Year to celebrate the achievement of a child under 12.

Nominations close on 10 September and the winners will be announced at the Yorkshire Young Achievers Awards dinner on Thursday 24 November at the Leeds United Conference and Exhibition Centre.
