Ball raises £17,500 for Harrogate Cancer Centre

16 August 2016

The Sir Robert Ogden Macmillan Centre (SROMC) Ball Committee has handed over cheques worth £17,500 to Harrogate Hospital & Community Charity and Macmillan Cancer Support to be used to fund services for cancer patients being treated at the centre.

The donation to Harrogate Hospital and Community Charity will be used to fund the provision of Complementary Therapy Treatments which relieve some side effects of treatments and help with certain physical conditions and emotional issues resulting from a diagnosis of cancer and subsequent treatment.

The event was sponsored by Lights4Fun and Rabbit Hill Country Store and included live entertainment from ‘Ticket 415’.

The complementary therapies provided by the centre are funded entirely through voluntary donations and thanks to the money raised at last year’s ball; the service has been increased to offer treatment to four days a week. To keep the service going they need to raise around £50,000 a year.

This means that more people can benefit from the service and there are reduced waiting times, enabling people to be treated when they need it rather than when they can be fitted in!

David Fisher, Community and Events Fundraiser at Harrogate Hospital and Community Charity said:

Thanks to the hard work and dedication of the organising committee and to those who dug deep on the night we are able to fund services that go above and beyond the provision of the NHS, making a real difference to our patients and their families.

Michaela Ryder, Fundraising Manager for Macmillan in Harrogate said:

As well as the complimentary therapy service, the money raised from the Spring Ball will help us continue to fund Macmillan professionals in Harrogate to support local people affected by cancer. We have recently funded a Macmillan Health & Wellbeing Programme Manager at the Sir Robert Ogden Centre to ensure that cancer survivors receive the care and support they need after they have finished their treatment, and lead as healthy and active life for as long as possible.

Preparations are already underway for next year’s ball which will take place on Saturday 20 May 2017.
