Pupils from Belmont Grosvenor School sing at the UK’s biggest School Choir Concert

11 February 2013

Youngsters from Harrogate-based independent prep school Belmont Grosvenor joined thousands of pupils from across the country to take part in the UK’s biggest School Choir Concert.
Members of the school’s senior choir travelled to Sheffield to join in Young Voices 2013, a national choral event that brought together more than 7,000 children in a charity concert at Sheffield’s Motorpoint Arena.
Young Voices, the largest children’s choir in the world, aims to inspire and motivate children and young people and introduce them to the joys of music and singing. Since the event started 15 years ago, more than one million schoolchildren have taken part.
This is the second year that Belmont Grosvenor School, based at Swarcliffe Hall, Birstwith, has joined in the concert.
The Sheffield date was one of 15 arena concerts held at venues across the UK – and gave choir members the opportunity to sing alongside the internationally-acclaimed African Children’s Choir and 11-year-old Connie Talbot, a finalist in Britain’s Got Talent.

Madeline Shea, a member of Belmont Grosvenor School’s Senior Choir said everyone had loved taking part in the mass musical event – songs performed included U2’s Pride (In the Name of Love), The Beatles’ Let It Be and Gary Barlow and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Sing.

Madeline Shea  said:
We sang ‘Sing’, the same song that was composed for the Diamond Jubilee concert. We sang lots more songs and sang one song with the African Children’s Choir. Sadly the concert came to an end but we had a wonderful time

Sophie Johnston, Head of English at Belmont Grosvenor School said the children had thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Sophie said:
The concert was a sell-out in Sheffield so the pupils sang to an audience of 7,000 adults, in a choir of 6,500 children.

It was a magnificent event and the children particularly enjoyed singing ‘Let it be’ with Connie Talbot and ‘Sing’ with the African Children’s choir, who had sung at Buckingham Palace last summer.

I’m certain the children will remember this event for years to come.

Belmont Grosvenor School, along with its Magic Tree Day Nursery, is set in 20 acres of grounds on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales, and caters for children from the age of three months to 11 years.
