13 June 2012

Julian SaphirNot one, not two but three Kawai pianos are to be installed in the Royal Hall ahead of Harrogate Symphony Orchestra’s Summer Concert on June 23.

Two upright instruments will be on display in the perambulatory area of the venue giving the audience an opportunity to have a closer look at them before the concert and during the interval.

The third piano in the collection, all of which have been donated by Mark Crossland of The PianoMan, will be a Shigeru Kawai Concert Grand.

HSO conductor Bryan Western said:

The highlight of the evening will undoubtedly be the Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No 2 performed by pianist Julian Saphir (pictured) on theShigeru Kawai Concert Grand, which is the crème de la crème of concert grands.

We’re thrilled to have an opportunity to feature such an incredible instrument as part of our summer performance.

This is the first time we have ever taken this approach to a concert and it has been an exciting move that has resulted in a wonderful programme that celebrates the very best in classical music.

Harrogate Symphony Orchestra’s summer concert features a programme chosen by the audience, who voted for their favourite pieces to be performed.

The programme includes Hebrides Overture by Mendelssohn, Finlandia by Sibelius, Vltava by Smetana, In the Steppes of Central Asia by Borodin, extracts from Swan Lane and Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture.

Tickets for the Harrogate Symphony Orchestra Summer Concert on Saturday June 23rd are available from the Harrogate Theatre Box Office Tel: 01423 502116.
