Breast cancer patients at Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust (HDFT) are set to receive faster diagnoses and quicker treatment decisions following the introduction of pioneering new artificial intelligence technology.
HDFT has become the first NHS Trust in the country to introduce an AI-enabled HER2 tissue scanning system for clinical use, marking a major milestone in local cancer diagnostics. The cutting-edge scanner, manufactured by Roche, will be used by the Histopathology Department at Harrogate District Hospital to assess breast cancer tissue samples with unprecedented speed and efficiency.
The £40,000 project was made entirely possible by the Harrogate Hospital & Community Charity (HHCC), whose supporters rallied to raise the funds during the charity’s recent 30th birthday campaign.
How the AI Technology Works
The innovative Roche scanner captures high-resolution digital images of tissue samples. An advanced, integrated AI algorithm then analyzes the images to support pathologists in assessing HER2 status—a vital biological factor used to determine if a patient will benefit from targeted drug therapies.
The algorithm specifically detects the presence of the HER2/neu gene, which can drive breast cancer growth. By automating the initial pattern detection, the software allows pathologists to review cases far more rapidly while ensuring rigorous, expert clinical oversight remains at every single stage of the process.
Delivering test results earlier allows clinical teams to establish tailored treatment plans much faster. This accelerated pathway drastically improves patient outcomes while significantly reducing the emotional anxiety families face while waiting for critical medical answers.
A Milestone for Local Healthcare
The acquisition represents a broader push by HDFT to integrate modern digital health tools into everyday care. The Trust already uses specialized AI software across other departments, including tools that speed up fracture diagnoses and enhance the accuracy of chest x-rays for conditions like lung cancer.

While the scanner’s initial deployment is strictly focused on streamlining the breast cancer care pathway, hospital leaders hope to expand its use in the future to interpret biomarkers for other forms of the disease, including lung cancer.
