RSPCA York Animal Home has today launched a major public appeal to help transform its ageing facilities and secure the future of animal welfare across York, Harrogate and the surrounding region.
The charity is seeking to raise £2 million for the first phase of a transformational redevelopment project that will create a modern cattery, specialist puppy facilities and a new community welfare hub. The first phase forms part of a wider £5 million vision to completely redevelop the site over the next few years, with Phase One targeted for completion by June 2027.
The appeal launches with £1.2 million already secured, including a significant £100,000 contribution from Pets at Home, leaving £800,000 still needed to complete Phase One.
With construction already underway, securing the remaining funding is essential to keep the project on track and deliver these vital new facilities by June 2027.
For nearly 50 years, York Animal Home has provided a safe haven for vulnerable animals who have been abandoned, neglected, mistreated or left with nowhere else to turn. Every year, hundreds of dogs, cats and small animals pass through its doors, receiving veterinary care, rehabilitation and the chance to find a loving new home.
While proudly operating under the RSPCA banner, York Animal Home is an independently funded local charity. The Home relies on the generosity of supporters, businesses, charitable trusts and foundations to fund its work caring for vulnerable animals across York, Harrogate and the surrounding region.
However, the charity’s facilities are now struggling to meet modern welfare expectations.
Some animal accommodation is already unusable, puppy facilities can accommodate only a fraction of the animals they were originally designed for, and ageing buildings are becoming increasingly difficult to maintain.
Without significant redevelopment, the charity faces growing challenges in continuing to provide the level of care that vulnerable animals deserve.

Every animal that arrives at York Animal Home deserves a safe place to recover, heal and begin a new chapter. For almost fifty years we’ve been providing that second chance, but our facilities are no longer fit for the future.
This redevelopment is about far more than buildings. It’s about ensuring vulnerable animals across York, Harrogate and the surrounding region continue to receive the care they need for generations to come.
Many people are surprised to learn that York Animal Home is an independently funded local charity. While we’re proud to be part of the RSPCA family, the work we do here relies on the generosity of our community and supporters.
We’ve made a fantastic start, with £1.2 million already secured, but the next few months are crucial. With construction underway and our sights set on completing Phase One by June 2027, every donation received now will help us maintain momentum and bring these much-needed facilities closer to reality.
Phase One of the redevelopment will deliver:
- Specialist accommodation for puppies and their mothers
- A modern purpose-built cattery with improved welfare facilities
- A new multi-purpose community welfare hub supporting education, training, rehabilitation and community engagement
The wider redevelopment will ultimately create modern dog rehabilitation facilities and kennels, improved veterinary and adoption spaces, and sustainable buildings designed to reduce operating costs and support the charity’s long-term future.
York Animal Home is encouraging individuals, businesses, charitable trusts and community groups to get involved in the campaign. Supporters can contribute through one-off donations, regular giving, corporate partnerships and sponsorship, major gifts, Trust and Foundation support, legacy pledges and through fundraising events and community initiatives.
