OFSTED: “Care, compassion and commitment are characteristic of pupils’ experience at Harrogate High School”

Ofsted Inspectors have praised pupils’ positive attitudes to their learning at Harrogate High School, noting that “teaching has improved significantly” as a result of the effective change brought about by school staff leaders.

The school’s latest Ofsted report has been published today (14 April 2026), after an inspection which took place in February.

Harrogate High School is part of Northern Star Academies Trust, which is a group of 15 schools across Harrogate, Skipton, Keighley and Bradford.

The Ofsted inspectors report that:

Ambition is high across subjects. Leaders have maintained their focus on providing a high-quality, broad and balanced curriculum for all.
Leaders have fostered an inclusive culture which threads through all areas of the school.
Leaders have created a positive school culture underpinned by clear values and expectations.

Staff feel well supported by leaders and value the training provided.
Pupils benefit from a wide range of opportunities to develop their talents and interests, with a broad range of clubs, community projects and trips.

The report is in the new style of Ofsted reports, with behaviour, teaching, inclusion, leadership and student wellbeing all assessed as being at the “expected standard”. Inspectors noted that student achievement needs attention, which recognising that “improvements that have been made are having a positive effect, with pupil attainment getting better”. The performance of disadvantaged pupils has “improved considerably” said inspectors.

Headteacher, Sukhraj Gill, who has led improvement at Harrogate High since 2021 said:
“This report is a tribute to the hard work put in by pupils, teachers and leaders over several years to build a school which is ambitious, inclusive and succeeding. I am especially pleased that inspectors recognised our school as a special place where we know our students well and that their experience of Harrogate High is one of care, compassion and commitment.”
