Harrogate Golf Club Hosts England Golf Senior Men’s County Finals 2025

15 October 2025

Harrogate Golf Club was proud to host the 2025 England Golf Senior Men’s County Finals, welcoming four of the country’s top county sides — Lincolnshire, Sussex, Cheshire and Cornwall — for three days of top-class golf, sportsmanship and camaraderie.

Over the course of the week, the standard of play was exceptional, with very little to separate the teams. The opening day set the tone, as Lincolnshire and Sussex took an early lead after hard-fought matches that went right down to the final holes. One of the standout moments came from Richard Stockdale of the Cheshire team, who produced a spectacular hole-in-one on the 12th, striking a 7-iron from the very back of the white tees.
Day two continued in thrilling fashion, with Cheshire and Cornwall recording wins that left all four counties level on match points heading into the final day — setting up an unforgettable finale. In the end, it was Lincolnshire who made history, clinching their first-ever Senior Men’s County Finals title after a dramatic closing session. It was a fitting conclusion to a week that showcased the very best of English senior county golf.

Why Harrogate Golf Club

Harrogate Golf Club was selected by England Golf following a detailed application and assessment process. The club applied to host a national championship, and after a site visit, the England Golf team met with staff and officials to review the course, clubhouse, and facilities. Their positive assessment of Harrogate’s well-presented course, welcoming atmosphere, and experienced team helped clinch the decision. England Golf then worked closely with the club in the lead-up to the event, guiding the team through preparation and planning to ensure a successful championship.

A Club Proud to Host

Reflecting on the week, Harrogate Golf Club Men’s Captain, John Shepherd, said:

Hosting the England Golf Senior Men’s County Finals has been a huge honour for Harrogate Golf Club. We’re not used to staging an event of this scale, but with the fantastic support from England Golf — particularly Emma and Lewis — the week has been a real success.

I’m immensely proud of everyone involved, from our greens team led by Richard MacKenzie and Ken Ward, who presented the course so beautifully despite the challenges of Storm Amy, to Clare, Steve and the catering team who kept everyone so well looked after throughout the week.

A special mention also to Joanne and Francesca, whose planning and coordination behind the scenes were central to the smooth running of the event. And, of course, to our volunteers — their enthusiasm and generosity of time made such a difference to the experience for players and visitors alike.

The standard of golf has been exceptional, but equally memorable has been the camaraderie and spirit shown by every team. It’s been a real pleasure to host such a special event.

A Championship to Remember

The England Golf Senior Men’s County Finals once again showcased the depth of talent in senior county golf, but also the spirit and sportsmanship that defines the game at its best. For Harrogate Golf Club, it was a momentous week that will be remembered with great pride.
