One of the world’s greatest classical musicians, Nicola Benedetti, is heading to North Yorkshire for a special performance at Harrogate’s Royal Hall later this year, when she will kick off Harrogate International Festivals’ 60th anniversary celebrations.
‘An Evening with Nicola Benedetti and Friends’ takes place on December 4, when the Grammy and Classical BRIT Award-winning violinist will be joined on stage by fellow musicians including Brazilian guitarist Plinio Fernandes and accordionist Samuele Telari.
The Scottish-born superstar, hailed by The Times as “the country’s favourite violinist”, is appearing in Harrogate as part of her first solo tour in more than 10 years. She will perform a selection of shorter works – from romantic to folk – and will talk about her choice of musical pieces, and her experiences over the past decade.
As well as being a world-renowned musician, Benedetti is a passionate advocate of music education through her Benedetti Foundation and her role as Director of the Edinburgh International Festival, and continues to inspire audiences and musicians alike.
The concert also marks the start of Harrogate International Festivals’ HIF@60 campaign which is tasked with raising £1m to help secure the long-term future of the arts charity.
Since its inception in 1966, Harrogate International Festivals has transformed the cultural landscape of the North Yorkshire spa town through world class concerts, performances and events.
Originally established as the Harrogate Festival of Arts & Science, the Festivals has evolved over the years. It was at the forefront of classical music in the 1960s, the vanguard of comedy and street theatre in the 80s and 90s, and now its diverse portfolio includes the Theakston Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival, HACS Harrogate Music Festival, Berwins Salon North and Raworths Harrogate Literature Festival.
Sharon Canavar, chief executive of Harrogate International Festivals, said:
I’m absolutely thrilled that Nicola Benedetti, one of the most influential violinists of her generation, is coming to Harrogate. It’s going to be a memorable evening and is a fantastic way to start our anniversary celebrations.
It is remarkable for any arts charity to have been going for 60 years and the fact we have is testament to our innovative programmes that have enriched so many people’s lives. Throughout this time we have relied on the generosity of donors and sponsors in order to produce so many great festivals and events.
Funding for the arts has arguably never been more challenging, which is why our appeal to raise £1m is crucial to ensuring security, and a long-term sustainable future, for our arts charity. Our aim is for Harrogate International Festivals to thrive, not just survive, and to continue increasing the cultural opportunities for Harrogate and the wider region.
