British Gas engineers based in Leeds and Harrogate have come together this Easter to support Woodhall Children’s Ward at Harrogate Hospital, after several members of the team had children or grandchildren receive care there in recent months. Wanting to give back in recognition of the dedication and support shown to their families, the engineers organised a donation to thank the ward for the vital work they do for local children and families.
The engineers and their manager initially planned to donate almost 50 Easter eggs to the ward. However, after speaking with staff, they learned that the ward cares for children of all ages and that toys are limited due to strict infection control measures. As a result, they felt that providing more toys and activities would have a greater impact on the children on the ward.
The team sought wider support from the business and applied for British Gas community funding, which enabled them to donate almost £1,000 to purchase much‑needed toys and games for the ward, including baby cot accessories, Nintendo Switch games, LEGO and bracelet making kits.
Each year, British Gas donates more than £1 million to local causes through direct donations and matched funding, including support delivered via its Local and Community Fund. The fund focuses on encouraging colleague engagement and supports projects aligned to its three Big Difference themes of Children and Young People, Health and Poverty.
